Pups in the News400-year-old seafaring dog skeleton to go on display The skeleton of a dog that died 465 years ago in a ship disaster will go on display at the Mary Rose Museum in Portsmouth, England, soon.Back in 1545, the Mary Rose sank off Portsmouth in the Battle of the Solent. The vessel was raised in 1982 and researchers have discovered the skeleton of a female dog that had been trapped in the sliding door of the carpenter's cabin. The dog, which has been nicknamed 'Hatch' by museum staff, was probably kept as a rat catcher. Hatch will be on display from 26 March 2010. Deaf dog learns sign language How do you train a puppy if she's deaf?We humans rely on voice commands so much, it's hard to imagine how on earth you could train a dog using hand signals alone, right from the start. But that's just what many clever, patient, caring people throughout the world do. Pixie is a border collie who started learning sign language at the age of 8 months. Pixie's trainer, Liz Grewal in Coffs Harbour, Australia, trained the dog using body language and gestures. Ms Grewal believes that, far from being a difficult task, training deaf dogs can actually be quicker, since there are no noise distractions. But how do you get your puppy's attention if it's deaf? Ms Grewal has worked that one out – a quick squirt of water and Pixie is all ... eyes! Did You Know ... ?The Dingo may be the world's oldest breed of dog.The native dog of Australia, the dingo has been shown by new international research to be most like the dogs domesticated in Asia and the Middle East thousands of years ago. Along with the New Guinea singing dog, they are the breeds most closely related to wolves. Dingo preservation groups are now calling on the Australian Government to do more to protect this unique native dog, whose survival as a distinct breed is threatened by cross-breeding with feral domestic dogs. Thanks for taking the time to read Puppy Scraps - I hope you've enjoyed it. Don't forget to pass it along to your friends! There'll be another issue along in a few weeks (no, honestly!). Bye for now Jay, Tilda and Bodhi |
