Who is the English Springer Spaniel?

An ancient breed, English Springer Spaniel puppies are ideally suited to life as a sporting dog but also excel at obedience and agility. They are also playful and devoted to their owners.

Breed history

The English Springer Spaniel is the largest of the ancient land spaniels (types of hunting dogs bred for bird hunting), which were developed at least 500 years ago. They were used to flush out, or ‘spring’, the game from the undergrowth. It became a registered breed in England in the early 20th century.

The English Springer Spaniel’s all round sporting abilities and its affectionate, devoted nature have made it one of the most popular puppy breeds in the United Kingdom.

Personality

  • Intelligent
  • Active
  • Affectionate
  • Eager to please

Good with children?

Yes - English Springer Spaniel puppies make a great family dog but require a good deal of exercise.

Exercise needs

They are an energetic medium sized dog breed and require vigorous, regular exercise. They also love to swim.

Health

English Springer Spaniels are generally a strong, healthy dog.

Possible health problems

Progressive retinal atrophy or PRA (a retinal disease that can affect all breeds of dogs, leading to night blindness and gradual loss of day vision)

Hip and elbow dysplasia (a disease that can cause lameness and arthritis in the hips or elbows)

Retinal dysplasia (a non-progressive retinal disease)

Allergies to certain fleas and grasses (rare)

Good breeders should x-ray or test their dogs for as many of these conditions as possible before breeding, or should avoid breeding from dogs that display the conditions.

Grooming

The English Springer Spaniel’s long coat requires regular grooming and can be trimmed. The hair between the pads of the paws should be trimmed to avoid matting.

The breed has long, floppy ears which do not allow the air to flow around the ear's opening. The ears can become infected but regular cleaning with an ear cleanser should keep them in good condition (ask your vet or pet shop for a good product to use).

When grooming, remember to check the paws, ears and coat for grass seeds. Also check for any minor injuries and check the teeth to see if they need cleaning.

Ideal owner

The ideal English Springer Spaniel owner will have the time to give their dog the regular, vigorous exercise it requires and to care for its beautiful coat.

Avoid leaving English Springer Spaniel puppies alone for long periods of time as their intelligent and playful nature can lead to destructive behaviour.
