Who is the West Highland White Terrier?

An active, alert and fun-loving dog, Westies, are they are often called, are faithful and friendly.

As the Westie's coat is not shed, it may be suitable for people who are allergic to dogs. (If you are allergic to dogs, you should take an allergy test before buying any breed of dog.)

Breed history

West Highland White Terriers were bred from other terriers such as the Cairn Terrier and the Scottish Terrier.

They were developed in the early 1800s in the western highlands of Scotland as a sturdy hunting companion that was well-suited to hunting over the wild Scottish moors and hillsides. They were selectively bred to be white to make them visible against the vegetation and rocks, and to easily distinguish them from the prey.

Westies have the typical terrier temperament: active, feisty, alert and self-important. They have become one of the most popular puppy breeds in the United Kingdom.

Personality

  • Active and alert
  • Fun-loving
  • Faithful
  • Self-reliant
  • Friendly

Good with children?

Yes. A Westie that is introduced to children early will be an energetic and hardy family companion.

Exercise needs

The Westie will happily follow its owner over all terrain and in all weathers and loves a long walk.

Health

One of the small dog breeds, West Highland White Terriers are generally hardy and healthy.

Possible health problems

Craniomandibular osteopathy ('lion's jaw' - a developmental disease in dogs causing extensive bony changes in the mandible and skull, generally occurring between the ages of 3 and 8 months)

Allergies

Good breeders should x-ray or test their dogs for as many of these conditions as possible before breeding, or should avoid breeding from dogs that display the conditions.

Grooming

Westies should be trimmed every three or four months and must be regularly brushed to avoid matting.

As the coat is not shed, Westies can be considered hypoallergenic dogs - that is, they may be suitable for people who are allergic to dogs. However, if you are allergic to dogs, you should always take an allergy test as allergic reactions can differ from person to person.

When grooming, remember to check the paws, ears and coat for grass seeds. Also check for any minor injuries and check the teeth to see if they need cleaning.

Ideal owner

The ideal Westie owner will give this independent and faithful little dog good training when young and will involve it in family activities, as it prefers to be with its human companions.

Remember to train West Highland White Terriers not to dig in the garden - as an 'earth dog' (bred to dig out prey that burrows into the earth), the average Westie can't resist a nice flower bed!
